A tribute to the great Tenor Saxophone Legend

![]() John Coltrane is the undisputed modern master of the tenor saxophone. From his early work with Miles Davis to his famous 60’s quartet, Trane spent his brief time on this planet continually searching for new ideas and breaking new ground. Today, after more than fifty years since his death, you’d be hard pressed to find a serious jazz tenor player who hasn’t been influenced by this great master. The most in demand tenor sax player in Northern New Mexico, Alex Murzyn moved to Santa Fe in 2017 from the San Francisco Bay Area. After thirty years his resume’ includes The Stan Kenton Legacy Band, The Dizzy Gillespie Big Band, Bobby Hutcherson, Arturo Sandoval, Freddie Hubbard and Stanley Clarke. He is one of the most versatile saxophone players I know and one of the very few who can take on a project like this. Alex will take you from Coltrane’s early “Sheets of Sound” right up through the ground breaking work he contributed to the Modal Jazz Scene of the 1960’s, and thrill you at every turn. For this concert Alex will be accompanied by Bob Fox on piano, Terry Burns on bass and yours truly on the drums. Without a doubt you don’t want to miss this amazing tribute. Two generations, Two jazz masters ... come together in the "Master Legacy Series", a series that Emmet Cohen recorded, paying homage to jazz master Tootie Heath. Emmet is a young jazz piano player who has made an enormous impact on the current jazz scene over the last few years and Tootie’s career spans more than six decades playing and recording with everyone from Lester Young to Dexter Gordon and many more giants of jazz in between. In April of 2021, Tootie was awarded the highest honor given to any jazz musician, 'The National Endowment For The Arts Jazz Masters Award', in recognition of lifetime achievement. The honor is bestowed upon individuals who have made significant contributions to the art form. On Friday, September 9th, they will come together to show us why they are both such prominent figures in the jazz world and how timeless this music is when more than fifty years of separation in age makes for a seamless musical performance. So come on out and help us all celebrate Santa Fe’s own Albert Tootie Heath ... still tearing it up in his octogenarian years.
