GENE KRUPA STORY

Ten years ago marked a historic milestone for jazz in Northern New Mexico. The Santa Fe Music Collective was born from an idea who’s mission was to bring the highest quality jazz to Santa Fe. That same year, I accepted the challenge by “Stars Never Fade Productions” to play the leading role of Gene Krupa in their production of Drummin’ Man at the Santa Fe Playhouse. The show was a highly acclaimed success ……. "mission accomplished". In 2023, we are on track to present 20 plus concerts in three separate venues, hosting some of the finest world class musicians in jazz today. We start 2023 with our participation in the first annual “Art + Sol” Winter Festival along with the most prestigious music presenters in our beautiful cultural capital of the southwest. On February 17th, SFMC will be celebrating our tenth anniversary with the revival of “Drummin’ Man” at SITE Santa Fe. We will be hosting a nine piece band of New Mexico’s finest, playing the Quincy Jones arrangements that helped propel the Gene Krupa Band to national fame in the 1940’s. Come help us celebrate Jazz history right here in Santa Fe.

7J. Q WHITCOMB
plays
Monk & The Mid Century Moderns

A Santa Fe favorite son in the jazz community, J.Q. has been making his mark in NYC for several years, returning only occasionally to visit family and do some playing in his home town. It’s always a joy to see how living in the Big Apple can influence one’s musical maturity, especially in the case of such a mega talent as J. Q.  Coming off the heals of playing the part of Roy Eldridge in “Drummin’ Man”… the musical legacy of Gene Krupa, (on Friday, February 17th at SITE Santa Fe),
J. Q. will be playing the music of Thelonious Monk at Club Legato with the house rhythm section of Bob Fox - Piano, Terry Burns - Bass, and John Trentacosta on Drums. I’m so looking forward to hear J. Q. let loose in the comfort of his music of choice in the town where he grew up.
Seating is limited, so get your tickets early.

The mere mention of the name Hillary Smith almost always redirects the conversation to high praise about what a great talent she is. “Everyone Loves Hillary” should be the title of a local cable TV show featuring her iconic voice and warm personal ability to connect with her audience. Equally at home singing her signature R & B, Soul, Funk or Gospel, New Mexico’s favorite singer has once again agreed to an entire concert of jazz standards at SITE Santa Fe. If you haven’t heard her drenched in lyrics from The Great American Standards, you’ve got to treat yourself to an evening of beautiful music from this local icon …. accompanied by Bob Fox - Piano, Alex Murzyn - Tenor Saxophone, Terry Burns - Bass, and yours truly JT - Drums.
Excitement personified, Hillary’s concerts always sell out and that’s why we’re posting this one early so you can be sure not to miss it.
