With a
career spanning four decades, jazz flutist Ali
Ryerson continues to tour, record and teach master classes internationally.
Consistently voted among the top jazz flutists in the Downbeat Jazz Poll and honored
as Jazz Flutist of the Year nominee
by the Jazz Journalists Association, Ali
has released nearly two dozen recordings on major jazz labels such as Concord, DMP, Capri Records, and
legendary jazz producer Bob Thiele’s Red
Baron. Ali has recorded and/or toured with jazz icons such as Kenny Barron,
Frank Wess, Joe Beck, Mike Mainieri, Roy Haynes, Hubert Laws, Stephane
Grappelli, Art Farmer and Red Rodney, to name a few, as well as classical
artists Julius Baker and Luciano Pavarotti. Ryerson was principal flutist with
the Monterey Bay Orchestra in the early ‘90’s, NFA Jazz Chair 2005-’10, founder
of the NFA Jazz Flute Big Band, and
author of the popular Jazz Flute Practice
Method book. Ali has presented her
weeklong annual Jazz Flute Master Class in California since 2002, conducts master
classes worldwide in various locations such as New Mexico, Canada, Italy,
Holland, New Zealand, Eastman School of Music, and has taught on the faculty of
the Litchfield Jazz Camp, IJAM JAZZ summer camp in Italy, and as visiting
faculty member at The Jazzschool in
Berkeley, California. A cum laude
graduate of the Hartt School of Music,
Ali’s classical training was with Harold Bennett and John Wion. Ali Ryerson is a Gemeinhardt Artist and
Clinician, with an Autograph Series of flutes she helped design. It was voted
among the top new products at Namm in 2012.
August 2013 marked the CD release of The Ali Ryerson Jazz Flute Big Band, GAME CHANGER, on Capri Records, which debuted at #24 on the Jazz Charts. The album features Ryerson’s groundbreaking 19-piece jazz flute ensemble, with a guest appearance by NEA Jazz Master Hubert Laws. More about Ali Ryerson at www.aliryerson.com
