MARCOS CAVALCANTE
"Tribute to Choro"
Marcos Cavalcante was born in Bahia, Brazil and currently lives in Los Alamos, New Mexico. As a well- respected guitarist, composer and arranger, Marcos has developed his musicianship in Jazz, Brazilian Jazz and Popular Music (Musica Popular Brasileira), Classical Guitar, and World Music.
Marcos has played numerous concerts and conducted workshops throughout Brazil, Japan, and across the United States, including academic venues such as Indiana University, University of Louisville, Interlochen Center for the Arts (Traverse City, Michigan), Duke University, and Oklahoma University. Marcos has played with renowned musicians such as Dominic Spera, Pat Harbison, John Rangel, Steve Allee, Phil DeGreg, Rique Pantoja, Kanoa Kaluhiwa, Jack Wilkins, Farrell Vernon, Mike Tracy, Tom Walsh, Tom Clark, Luis Guerra, Jeremy Allen, Mike Valerio, Tyrone Wheeler, Frank Smith, Diego Arencon, Steve Davis, Rogerio Boccato, Tom Taylor, Steve Barns, Kenny Phelps, and many others.
Marcos received his Doctoral Degree in classical guitar and his Master’s Degree in Jazz studies from Indiana University. He received his Bachelor’s Degree in music/composition from Universidade Estadual de Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil). Marcos was as an assistant instructor at Jacobs Music School, Indiana University, from 1990 to 1999. Later he became a full time professor at Northern New Mexico College. In Brazil, he was a professor in both classical and jazz music programs at Universidade Estadual de Campinas (São Paulo, Brazil). Cavalcante teaches classical, Brazilian and jazz guitar, jazz improvisation, and jazz theory. He has a studio at his home in Los Alamos.
