A true milestone in anyoneʼs life is reaching the age of ninety. In the jazz world that achievement is celebrated with a huge party and a concert in honor of that special artist, especially if he or she is still performing. Arlen Asher will reach both those milestones on May 7th and we have a huge celebration planned in his honor, including a performance by this master musician who is still at the top of his game. Since Arlenʼs arrival in Northern New Mexico in 1958, we have been graced with his outstanding musicianship and love of teaching. We have relished in referring to him as our own musical treasure. Over the years Arlen has received every award given to an artist, from The Governorʼs Award for Excellence in The Arts, to most recently The New Mexico Music Commissionʼs Platinum Award. On May 5th we will all have our own opportunity to celebrate with Arlen at SITE Santa Fe as The Santa Fe Music Collective presents a special event in honor of this great musician and beautiful human being. Iʼm sure glad Iʼve got my ticket and Iʼd say youʼll want to get one pretty quickly, as we are sure there will be many more of us wanting to be there than we will be able to accommodate.
